Saving money with a server upgrade

Writing by 1call on Sunday, 7 of February , 2010 at 10:00 am

Are you looking for where you can save some of the money you have to help your business? Would you consider improving the main servers running your business?   A new server, better spam  and virus filtering firewall, gigabit high speed switches, network monitoring tools are a few productive improvements.

If your server is 3-5 years old and out of warranty it is time to migrate to a new server.  Why?

When you pick the time to upgrade the server your business will avoid the major disruption of a server crash and data recovery.  The best practice is to upgrade while everything is still working.
Enjoy the benefits of new server capabilities.

Some business owners have said things are fine believing this saves money but it does not.  The cost of migrating after a server crash is four times as much because of disaster recovery also required to get your business data, quickbooks, databases and files from backups. Losing business and employees not being able to work simply compounds the cost of doing nothing.

A new server does a business good and technology purchases have some of the highest returns of investment! A good checkup on your server is advised.

We are available to discuss your office needs. Phone 9 7 2 – 4 1 8 – 2 0 0 0

Searchable PDF Files

Writing by 1call on Tuesday, 9 of June , 2009 at 7:09 pm

We all have seen PDF files and certainly enjoy the ease of use and ability to email documents to others without worry that they will be able to open and read the documents.

Along comes searching and PDF files are out in the cold or so it would seem.  If you are in need of a searchable pdf solution you are at the right place.  Searchable pdf’s for the office requires more than purchasing a copy of Adobe Acrobat.

Depending on how much you scan or how many pdf files you create there are a few different solutions we will recommend during consultation about your needs.   Doctors, lawyers, mortgage companies have huge amounts of pdf files and by adding the search capability the company will not have to keep buying file cabinets for paper storage.

The website says Dallas computer service but we can help where ever your office is located.  Contact us for more information.

We are available to discuss your office needs. Call 972-418-2232

T-Mobile business customers put at back of the line

Writing by 1call on Monday, 13 of October , 2008 at 8:33 pm

October 12, 2008

This post is for business customers of T-mobile who might have placed an order for the G1 phone due for release this month.  We placed our order over the phone after the website order system broke down.  Last week a rep by phone confirmed an order was in place and that tracking information would be coming soon.

We spoke with Angela a customer service rep this week and got a totally different story. Business customers are not actually eligible to order the new G1 phone featuring the Android operating system per company policy.  Yes, business customers are at the back of the line.  It didn’t matter if you planned in advance and responded promptly to banner advertisements etc..  First come first serve is not in the T-mobile company policy for business customers.  The policy says NO to business customers on this matter! In our case we called a month ago by phone only to be told October 12th there is no longer an order in the system.

We were informed by the customer service rep known only as Mike who said he might have to wait until January 2009 if he wanted one for his use.  He went on to say that HTC is having problems and is expected to be way behind.  That is not really new news just part of the conversation.

A complete recording of the conversation already in progress is available here. (Windows Media Format.)

We are hopefull the company will update the policy and support it’s business customers.
Business customers:  Be one of the last to get the G1 delivered to your door!

Notice: Google, the Google logo not abused here because we like Google, Google Maps, and Android are trademarks of Google Inc. T-Mobile and the magenta color are federally registered trademarks of Deutsche Telekom AG. G1 and T-Mobile G1 are trademarks of T-Mobile.  Any expression of frustration posted here can be easily rectified.

Reset Vista Password

Writing by 1call on Monday, 29 of September , 2008 at 10:41 am

If you lose your password to XP there are several ways to solve the issue but with Vista most people in this situation had to reload.  Be aware If you reformat and reload data recovery is much more difficult.  We can recover data without the passwords if needed.

For many, reloading Vista means losing some data and if you setup EFS then a reload is the next step. If you don’t know about EFS then 99% chance you are not using it.   If you just want to get back to work we can  help to reset most Vista passwords in the lab so If you cannot login to Vista contact our office.  If you are not in Dallas we can arrange for you to ship your computer to the lab.   Lab 972-418-2232

iPhone 2.1

Writing by 1call on Saturday, 20 of September , 2008 at 11:10 am

The iPhone 2.1 software came out last week as most of you know. Apple with it’s latest released made promises better battery life better wireless and g3 communication along with the ever needed speed increase for backing up and restore feature of the iPhone.

After just a few days with it I can say good things. Though wireless signal is a hard thing to test most of the other bugs certainly have been fixed to the specs that where claimed. The backup process took a little over 2 minutes as opposed to the previous 45. If you haven’t updated yet I suggest that you do.

Recommended app of the day: Remote

SBCGlobal.net ATT Outlook Error 553, Continues.

Writing by 1call on Monday, 12 of May , 2008 at 9:16 pm

One big happy dysfunctional family called ATT is continuing to wreak havoc on users. It is not clear if they were hacked and won’t admit it or if the system imploded and they won’t admit that either.

What is clear to users is if you run a business and use an address like professionalemail@mybusiness.com and access the internet using ATT DSL you will have more trouble than you bargained for.  We assume you have already changed the SSL ports which is why you were able to progress to the 553 relay error.  All ATT DSL accounts have an address like myname1234@sbcglobal.net but go to sbcglobal.net to actually login using the button at the top of the page you will get an error 100% of the time. No need to switch browsers from Firefox to IE that is not the problem.

Here is the error:

You can go to my.att.yahoo.com using the same information and login successfully with webmail. I realize you are reading this because you need your Outlook to work and like many don’t want webmail.
This link will help some with basic outlook settings http://helpme.att.net/article.php?item=285

Searching you may find your self reading the following useless article.
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-09.html

Here is a screen shot, and this info is wrong but keep reading.

In order to stop the error from happening you will have to login to the att.yahoo.com with your sbcglobal.net

account. Click on the Mail icon to go to your inbox. On the right will be an “Options” Link.

Next click on “Mail Address” in the center column.

Step 1. Click on “Add” the next prompt is to put in a friendly name. Click “Continue” which is almost hidden in the left corner under everything else but now you know where to find it.

Step 2, add the corporate email account. Click Continue.

Step 3. This the most important step. DON”T ENTER ANYTHING, click “Skip Shis Step”

Step 4. get ready to check your corporate email with Outlook. Click send verification and start checking your email address you entered in step 2. At the bottom of this email you will find the confirmation code. Copy and paste into the browser which is still on the confirmation screen. You will be prompted to enter the att password again and you are done.

Mail will now be allowed to go out under your corporate mail identity. Happy mailing!

Blu-ray DVD players win market share

Writing by 1call on Thursday, 3 of April , 2008 at 8:57 pm

The final end to the DVD player format contest is over. Toshiba and Sony both Japanese based companies have been clamoring for manufacturer support of their competing HD formats. Blu-ray holds more. Sony invested in Blu-ray integration with the popular Play Station 3. Toshiba struggled for support and announced they would no longer be producing products for the format . Consumers have just been confused by the whole affair anyway so this is a good thing. Blu-ray wins which is great for data users of the format but the video market is a different matter.

You would think life is going to be rosy but don’t be to sure. DVD in general is still in a battle for the video market. More and more free video on demand in HD is downloadable straight to your TV from the likes of Time Warner Cable, Verizon and others. Why bother with the DVD? So, we could be in for the eventual death of DVD but don’t count on it any time in the near future. The DVD is safe just as the movie theater is safe just as radio is safe.

The DVD’s you already have are going to play in your new Blu-ray DVD player just fine. iTunes would like to see you download the movie instead. The challenge is still how to get that download to the TV since almost no one uses the media center player included on many new computers. More computers are media ready but look around and see how many computers are next to the TV. Right, I thought so. We really get a kick out of seeing laptop manufacturers put cable connections on the laptop like home owners are going to unplug the TV and connect the coax to the laptop. What a total waste of resources! The point here is that there is still some distance to go before it is easy to download and watch shows using computers for the average dad. It is just to easy to drop a DVD into a player and press play or easy to pull up the cable menu and select a movie on demand. It is not as easy for most households and as creatures of habit we like looking through the selections at the video store.

Find a local home theatre installation company who can make the path easier and handle the cabling. Then you can decide if dropping a DVD in the player, which you have to go get, is easier than clicking a download from the internet or your own local video server storage.

HP Overtakes Dell

Writing by 1call on Wednesday, 2 of April , 2008 at 12:17 pm

It is official, HP has taken the lead in worldwide pc shipments over Dell Computers.  Dell continues to lose the edge as the preferred supplier of PC’s to both small and large businesses. Consumers are more savvy and the low price PC just doesn’t get the job done.  Buyers have found that shortly after the basement Dell purchase they are having to spend money upgrading.   Seasoned buyers are going back to other brands including the local PC builder and finding value and service more than satisfactory. Backup Data

Writing by 1call on Wednesday, 2 of April , 2008 at 12:16 pm

As we are in a new year be sure to make a full backup of your data.  Having a year end backup for accounting is pretty common but your entire business should be backed up.

Common Mistakes made by independent businesses.

  • Not having a process in place to do a backup
  • Not backing up data because it is poorly organized
  • Email is usually not stored with your regular files and is often overlooked and missed in a backup process
  • Email address backup is missed because data not stored with your regular files
  • Only having 1 tape or just never changing it.
  • Only having 1 hard drive if using a hard drive to store the backup
  • Never testing the backup

If you are running Windows 2003 server, any version a backup utility is included with options for full system recovery but you need to be sure to also run a special backup called ASR.

Windows XP Professional includes a backup utility automatically installed where for XP Home the backup isn’t automatically installed.

Depending on where you are backing up and the media type most people benefit from enahnced backup and restore software.  Teh built-in backup utilities work but are what they are.  In the case of servers and ASR recovery there are some real gotchya’s.  Microsoft does not consider them critical but the restore process can be much more difficult than need be.

If you have employees on the payroll not able to work for a single day due to backup failure that is very expensive lost time so it is important to have a backup, test the backup on a periodic basis and store multiple copies away from the office.

-Find yourself a good IT consulting firm who will listen and deliver your business solutions that add real value and  process improvement.
